Cult director Stuart Gordon and producer Brian Yuzna created one of the most important and best horror films from the 80s with Re-Animator
, which still has a cult status to this day. Of course, two more or less well done sequels followed which couldn't match the original, though. The movie is by the way based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft.
Of course, there are several versions of the movie. A recital of the different versions follows now:
The movie was cut to get the R-Rating in the USA for theatrical releases. Many gory scenes had to go, which were partly replaced with harmless alternate scenes. The studio thought that what was left of the runtime was too short, so they integrated plot scenes that were cut before, to adjust the runtime a little. This version was never director Stuart Gordon's favored version, though. The R-Rated version was released in the USA only on LD, apart from the theatrical release. The VHS-Version (as far as is known) as well as the US-DVDs contain the unrated version.
The unrated version, which often is being labelled as Director's Cut is completely uncensored considering violence. But the reimplemented plot scenes, which the R-Rated version contains, are missing. The Unrated is the director's favored version and was scheduled like this as it is.
This version offers a fusion of the unrated and rated R versions. Among others, it was released in Germany by CMV and not only contains all the gory details, but also the plot scenes of the R-Rated cut.
Apart from the Anchor Bay-DVD, the movie was only released slightly cut on VHS and DVD in England.
Both versions show different shots of Dr. Gruber grabbing his head.
Rated R: +2 seconds.
Unrated: 3 seconds.
Here, the shot from the unrated version showing Dr. Gruber grabbing his head, was reimplemented.
Dr. Gruber's eyes bloat.
His eyes burst. Blood splatters on the screaming nurse's face.
You see Dr. Gruber collapse from behind.
A long shot of Dr. Gruber's face, collapsing with burst eyes.
Dan trying to reanimate the woman is shown longer.
The executive doctor turning off the reanimating machine and walking away is shown in different shots in each version. In the R-Rated version, the scene is zoomed in a way you can only see the doctor. In the version that was not rated, though, you see the entire room including the corpse on the stretcher. Also, the doctor says Dan that his work was good, but that he should know when to stop. Finally, she also orders him to bring the body to the autopsy room.
Rated R: +6 Sec
Unrated: 15,5 Sec
Dr. Hill gets handed a cotton stick.
He then puts it into a small hole in the body's forehead. Then he pulls out the blood-smeared stick again.
There is alternate material in both versions here. The unrated version shows Megan topless getting out of bed and walking toward the camera. She stops and puts on a bra, while Dan is talking to her from the background. The R-Rated cut only shows Dan up close in the bed as well as a shot of Megan who has already put on her bra.
Rated R: +23 Sec
Unrated: 9,5 Sec
Now there is an alternate shot of the two doctors, writing down notes about Dr. Hill's work. Their facial expressions seem a little disgusted.
Dr. Hill pulls the scalp completely over the skull. The doctors write down notes. Contrary to the R-Rated version, they seem more relaxed.
A doctor is being faded in.
Dr. Hill puts away the brainpan and you can see the corpse's unveiled brain.
After West has broken his pencil to interrupt Dr. Hill's spech, he gets another pencil out. Dr. Hill continues his speech while the corpse with the opened skull is shown. West breaks another pencil. Dr. Hill interrupts his speech again and looks angrily at West.
A close-up of Megan's dead cat lying in the refridgerator.
The cat is shown longer.
Dan covers the cat's head with his hand.
The R-Rated version shows Dan throwing the zombie cat at a wall. In the unrated cut, you can also see it dashing against it and falling on the ground.
The cat which has died the second time now is seen longer here.
The dead cat is shown again. This time in a closer shot.
A shot to dan and the reanimated cat.
West syringes the reanimating elixir into the dead cat. Now, a view to him and Dan as well as a shot to the cat take place, returning from the realm of the dead.
The unrated version shows a shot of the screaming cat. That one was uses in the R-Rated version earlier as an alternative. But it's longer in the unrated version.
The resurrected cat is faded in once more.
As the zombie rises, a close-up of his face with the blood-splattered mouth is shown in the unrated cut.
The zombie turns to West and Dan.
The FSK-18 version shows a shot of West and Dan. Dan is screaming No!
as the zombie grabs Halsey. This No!
was used during the attack on Halsey in the unrated version.
Halsey is being lifted in the air by the zombie. After an edit to West and Dan, Halsey gets two fingers bitten of by the zombie. Now, the scene with West and Dan, showing him scream No!
takes place. Then, Halsey is being grabbed by the zombie and thrown against a wall.
As Halsey is still being attacked by the zombie, West sneaks up from behind and presses a bonesaw through the zombie's body, which treads out the belly. Dan watches this disgustedly as the zombie lifelessly drops to the ground. West goes to Halsey's corpse and drags with over to Dan. Dan says that the reanimated one has acted like an animal. West answers that he was possibly dead for too long. He also says that they need to reanimate Halsey as soon as possible, because he has just died and thus his body is still fresh. Dan first hesitates, but then he and West grab Halsey's body and carry it to the stretcher, laying it down there. West tells Dan to bring the cassette recorder and the serum, while he ties Halsey's body to the stretcher. Dan returns and hands the serum to West, as he immediately fills the syringe with it.
A part of the scene from above was reimplemented here in the R-Rated version. West drags the body to Dan. Both talk about the experiment gone wrong from just now. West and Dan get Halsey's body onto a stretcher and West prepares the syringe with the serum.
Halsey returning from the dead and a bit of blood flowing out of his mouth is shown longer. West greets and congratulates him to be among the living again.
Undead Halsey is seen in the foreground. West, sitting in the background, hears Megan's presence. Completely angered, he insults her and turns to the door.
The shot of West turning was reimplemented into the R-Rated version a little later.
Megan approaches the door.
Here, the scene of Megan approaching the door was reimplemented.
Therefore undead Halsey is shown longer here, grabbing West's and Dan's necks.
Straitjacket wearing Zombie-Halsey is seen longer.
Halsey in his cell is shown a little longer. Megan is standing in front of it and looks at him.
This scene is only shown in the R-Rated version: Dr. Hill asks Megan to call him Karl. Megan says that her father (Halsey) was an enemy of brain surgery. She also wants to know whether the other medicinical tests were taken on him.
A shot on Dr. Hill.
Halsey beats his head three more times against the pane of his cell.
Another take of Dr. Hill.
Megan and Dr. Hill as well as Halsey in the background are shown longer.
no time difference
West rams the shovel two more times into Dr. Hill's neck. Then you see from the side the shovel sticking bloodily in Hill's neck and him spitting blood.
An model-head is falling to the ground. Megan picks it up and puts it back on the dest. Meanwhile, Dan searches through the file cabinet. Megan goes to her father Halsey's cell, where she finds him cowering in a corner.
Hill's severed head falls to the side as the rest of his body reflexively starts to twitch. West takes the head and goes to the desk. As he arrives, he puts the head into a container. The head falls down several times, though, and West's attempts to keep it upright fail. He then takes a small note skewer and presses the head on it. Now the head doesn't fall over any more and West satisfiedly looks at it.
After West has syringed the serum into Hill's headless body, the R-Rated version fades to Megan turning away from Halsey's cell and going to the door as Dan continues to snoop in the files.
Now, the unrated version shows the scene during which Megan walks fron the cell to the door, leaving the room and Dan searching through the files. This was shown earlier in the R-Rated verison.
Hill's body turns away from its head and goes to the refridgerator from where it takes some stored blood. It walks back to its head and supplies it with blood. Then it grabs the head and goes to Halsey's cell with it, where the latter one is already waiting in front of the pane. The next take of Halsey is a little longer in the unrated cut.
Hill's body grabs the head (was shown earlier in the unrated version).
Hill's head appears before Halsey's cell pane. Hill tells him that the time has finally come for him to get out of there.
In the R-Rated version, you now see the scene during which Hill's body together with head is standing in front of Halsey's cell as well as the opening shot on Halsey.
Hill's head grabs his head from the bag and puts it into a container. The body then walks to the cooling chamber and gets a body from there. It pushes it directly next to the head.
The body continues to work on the corpse with the laser device. Hill's head is lying in the background.
As unconcious Megan is being put next to Halsey onto the stretcher by her father, both versions feature a different view. The unrated version is, of course, more explicit, since you see Hill's head in the blood-smirched container, whereas the R-Rated version shows everything from far away.
no time difference
A take of Halsey.
Exposed Megan is seen longer with Hill's head on the stretcher.
Here, the shot on Halsey is seen now, that was shown earlier in the R-Rated version. Naked Megan getting shackled and Hill's head - judging by the facial expression - seeming to enjoy this is shown longer, too.
Another shot on Hill's head with aroused facial expression.
Hill's body strokes Megan's breasts. His head can feel the action through telepathic powers. Therefore, his facial expression is accordingly aroused.
Two shots of screaming Megan as well as one of Hill's head grinning at her.
After Megan has beaten the artificial head from Hill's body, the unrated version features three more shots: The headless body, touching the empty space above its neck, Hill's laughing head and screaming Megan.
The body picks its head up from the container. A close-up of Hill's face takes place.
Hill's head being hold above Megan's body and licking several regions of her body is shown longer. As he wants to lick around between Megan's legs, he is being disturbed by West.
In the unrated version, the view of Hill's head talking to West is a close-up.
Dr. West is faded in.
Therefore, Hill's head is shown here.
Another take of West as well as Dan and Megan.
The head is shown another time.
The Unrated shows a close-up of Hill's head West talks to. This is shown from far away in the R-Rated cut.
Rated R: +5 Sek
Unrated: 4 Sek
A take of West.
A view of a zombie is seen now.
A zombie pulls a hose out of its mouth. Then a shot on screaming Megan as well as two more zombies takes place.
Hill's head starts laughing.
A zombie is shown.
Hill orders the zombie to get Dan. They grab him, then West is shown, then again Hill's head.
Longer shot in the unrated version.
Hill's head is shown longer in the end. Then, more takes of West, Hill's head talking to West, Dan and Megan on the floor and several zombies.
Halsey walks toward Dan and Megan. Meanwhile, Hill's body tries to burn a hole into West's forehead.
The take showing Dan being grabbed by Halsey is longer in the end. Fade-over to West, getting burnt on the forehead by the laser beam. Finally a shot to Dan being grabbed by Halsey takes place.
Die Einstellung ist in der 18er Fassung am Anfang etwas kürzer.
The take is a little shorter in the beginning in the R-Rated version.
Halsey looks over to West, who is continuingly being worked on with the laser.
Halsey grabs Hill's body, which is just performing a laser operation on West and throws it out of the room. The body stands up - confusing the guard who is standing next to it - and stumbles back into the morgue. During this scene, you see Hill's head from time to time, with an angry look on his face as well as Dan and Megan who are being attacked by a few zombies.
Halsey grabs Hill's head and, after a quick edit to Dan and Megan, bloodily squeezes it. Thereupon, the other zombies grab their heads in anguish.
He continues to squeeze the head until it literally falls apart. Then he throws the squished rest against a wall in the hallway, where, shortly after, the guard terrifiedly runs away.
A zombie is riots. Then a fade-over to Hill's body which is sitting on the ground.
An entero-string is shooting out of Hill's stomach.
West is seen with the intestines in his face. He drops to the ground. Shortly after, Hill's stomach bursts. Blood and guts are flying around. West is lying on the ground with the intestines around his body. Then you see Hill's shredded body once more.
Another take of the tattered body.
The zombie is shown longer at the end. Dan and Megan are subsequently being attacked by a female zombie. Halsey and a few other zombies join and pull the female zombie away. They then tear it into several pieces. Dan and Megan run away.
After the zombie has been electrified, the R-Rated version implemented the scene showing Dan and Megan running away.
Dan presses his hand into the head wound of the zombie (not gory).
Dan hits the zombie's arm two more times with the axe and severes it. With a kick, Dan manages to get the zombie out of the elevator. Then he rips the severed arm from Megan's neck and checks her pulse. Since she has now lost conciousness, he tries to reanimate her, as the twitching arm is shown in the foreground.
